Description of the item
This is a stunning, large, painted dial 8-day longcase clock in a mahogany case. The case most probably made by Gillows of Lancaster and is of exceptional quality. It has an ogee moulded door and rear hood columns. In truly stunning condition. Fully prepared for sale.
The 14" painted dial with fruit and flower decoration. Rack-striking 8-day movement. Height 7' 8" inc. finial.
Information about the maker
There is a Robert Lowe recorded in Preston between 1834 and 1851. (Loomes)
Since the photos were taken: Just a couple of missing small moulding have been replaced; the case has been cleaned and waxed; the dial has been professionally restored (touched-up); the movement has been fully overhauled. The dial, movement and case are all original to each other (ie not 'married').
The only 'flaws' are: the glass (original) has been marked with a postcode for security but could be replaced; the 'backboard' in the case has had a piece approx 10" square removed and replaced (with the original piece) - perhaps to provide access to a safe?
Cost of Restoration
Nothing required. The 'postmarked' glass could be replaced for £25.
